Part-time Music Director, St. Andrew’s-Chalmers Presbyterian Church, Uxbridge, ON
St. Andrew’s-Chalmers Presbyterian Church is a vibrant, missional, and community-oriented congregation in the heart of downtown Uxbridge. Job Overview
With a rich musical heritage that has shaped our worship for generations, our congregation continues to embrace both traditional hymns and contemporary expressions of praise. We are seeking a Music Director who will build on this legacy, lead us with creativity and skill, and inspire our worship and choir as we share the love of Christ with our community.
Musical Responsibilities
• Lead weekly Thursday evening choir rehearsal from September until mid-June, plus choir warmup / rehearsal at least 30 minutes prior to each service in which the choir is participating
• Direct, educate and nurture members of the SATB volunteer choir
• Play piano / organ to accompany hymns / praise songs, choral anthems and occasional special music (soloist/duet/small group) during 10:30 a.m. Sunday service, and other special services, such as Christmas Eve and Good Friday
• Provide piano or organ prelude prior to service, and postlude after service
• On occasion, oversee the musical involvement of children in special programs
• Encourage and support the participation during services of others from within the congregation to present their musical talents as needed
• Right of first refusal to provide music for weddings or funerals (compensated separately)
Administrative Responsibilities
• Coordinate with the Minister, who normally selects the hymns / praise songs for services, to appropriately select choral anthems for each worship service
• Prepare for seasonal events (Christmas Eve, Good Friday, Easter, Anniversary Sunday, etc.)
• Participate in meetings with staff and members of church committees as needed
• Maintain choral music library and copyright permission for all music; purchase new music in accordance with allocated budget
• Become familiar and proficient with the hybrid configuration of the organ
• Oversee and/or participate in organ maintenance, piano tuning and maintenance in accordance with allocated budget, and documentation of such activities
• Arrange for a competent substitute organist with agreement of the Minister and HR committee for coverage during personal absences
• Coordinate July & August worship service musicians (substitution for choral anthems)
Skills & Experience Required
• Strong keyboarding skills on organ and piano
• Previous experience directing, recruiting and working with a volunteer choir
• Proficient in educating choir members of varying skill levels
• Familiarity with the Presbyterian Church liturgy, hymnal and praise songs is an asset
• Excellent verbal and written communication and reliability
• Strong organizational skills and interpersonal skills
• Successful applicant must provide a current, clean Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening prior to starting in this role in accordance with the Leading with Care policy of the Presbyterian Church in Canada

• Access to the sanctuary piano or organ for teaching privileges, pending Session approval
• Reduced rental fees for recitals or concerts, or other church spaces, pending Session approval

Instruments: Custom hybrid 1900s era pipe and digital organ with approximately 90 stops specific to digital sample set; 2007 Knabe Grand Piano
